Cabinet to take up amendments to Lokpal Bill today

The Union Cabinet is also likely to take up amendments to the Lokpal Bill at Thursday’s meeting.

The UPA government has promised to bring the Bill to Parliament in the next session, under pressure from key allies like the Trinamool Congress and NCP to remove the mandatory state Lokayukta clause.

The Bill was passed in Lok Sabha last year but got stuck in the Upper House amid immense drama. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had held an all-party meeting on March 20 where the government had assured the Opposition of looking into their demands.

The bill in its amended form is likely to be taken up by the Rajya Sabha when the Parliament meets in the second half of the Budget Session from April 23.
